I am raising money for BackUp - the charity for people affected by spinal cord injury.

I am Daniel, and I am 16 years old. I suffered a rare spinal neuroimmune disease, which paralysed me from the waist down on 27 December 2020. During a 6 month hospital stay, we came across backup, a charity supporting people with spinal injuries. They linked me to mentors and people in a similar situation. I felt like I was not alone, despite my condition being 1 in a million. Backup linked me with other young people through Youth Break Out Lounges and mentoring. I realised the potential to do lots of activities despite being wheelchair bound

I visited the Lake District with backup in the summer of 2022, when I participated in a multi activity course. I tried activities I didn't think I could do on a wheelchair, such as rowing & zip lining. This helped build my confidence, and my brother accompanied me too.

I was struggling to adapt to my new school on a wheelchair. Andy from backup gave a fantastic talk my class on being wheelchair bound, which helped my classmates understanding and my confidence in school.
Backup also brought in people to educate staff on spinal disability.

Backup have done so much in such a short time. They empowered me to overcome the desolate feeling of being in a wheelchair and to live life to the full in a new normal.
